Escape

Typographic Motion in Space

An interactive installation where a single projected word — ESCAPE — breathes, waits, and leaps beyond its own typographic boundaries when a viewer walks by.

A word that wants to break out

Escape: Typographic Motion in Space is an interactive installation that merges typography, motion graphics, and an Arduino sensor to create a captivating visual narrative. The project blends Adobe After Effects for intricate motion graphics, Processing and Arduino for sensor-based interactivity, and a projector to bring the visuals to life in a physical space.

The word ESCAPE is projected onto a wall in a subtle wave motion — passive, rhythmic, waiting. When the motion sensor detects a passerby, the word shifts into a more dynamic motion, stretching and leaping beyond the conventional boundaries of its typographic shape as if trying to break free.

"ESCAPE" is more than a visual spectacle — it's an interactive experience that invites viewers to reflect on escape not just in a physical sense, but as a metaphor for breaking free from comfort zones. The piece stands as a small testament to the power of interactive art: a single word, transformed by motion and human presence, can provoke thought about freedom itself.

02 — Installation in Action

The work, alive

A documentation video from the installation — passersby walking through the projected word, the motion responding to their presence.

03 — The System

How it works

After Effects

The two motion states of the word — the subtle wave and the dynamic break — were designed and animated in After Effects as looping compositions.

Arduino + Processing

A motion sensor wired through Arduino sends detection events to Processing, which triggers the switch from passive to active animation.

Projector

A projector mounted on a pedestal casts the word onto the gallery wall, turning a flat surface into a reactive typographic canvas.

04 — Motion Studies

Typographic breaks

Loops from the After Effects compositions showing the word in two states — quiet wave and fractured escape.

05 — Typographic Sketches

Exploring the word

Before the motion and sensors, the word itself had to be resolved. Four sketches explored different ways a letterform can feel like it's escaping — torn, falling, compressed, or dancing out of alignment.

06 — Hardware

The physical layer

A custom-fabricated white enclosure houses the Arduino motion sensor, mounted on the wall to read approach. The projector sits on a pedestal across the space.
